Three Places to Eat While Attending CUNA's GAC
If you will be attending CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference this coming weekend in Washington DC, you might consider in advance a list of things to do. Having attended GAC 11 years myself and being a former resident of the area, I might know a thing or two about what to do... So, why not venture off the conference path as you hike the hill, crash the GAC and listen to the keynote speakers? If for no other reason, do it for me... I will be stuck in the Exhibit Hall.
Washington DC is a well known foodie town and if you are seeking professional recommendations consider Zagat, who ranks DC as the number 3 food city in the US. If you are open to considering amatuer food recommendations keep reading (you will not find these places on Yelp's top 100).
1. Julia's Empanadas. Just a short walk from Dupont Cirlce, Julia's is a cash only/takeout only spot serving freshly baked empanadas filled with meats, fruits or vegetables. For $5.00 you can get a quick, delicious meal on the go. Julia's also offers specials that include an empanada, a fruit empanada and a soda for less than $7.00. I recommend the Chilean style empanada - who doesn't like kalamata olives and hard boiled eggs inside a fresh, warm handmade turnover? Julia's Empanadas - 1221 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036
2. Ben's Chili Bowl. A metro ride to the U Street Station (Yellow & Green Lines) will take you to this DC establishment. Ben's has been a DC fast food icon since 1958. The signature dish at Ben's is the Original Chili Half-Smoke - a 1/4lb. half pork and beef smoked sausage on a warm steamed bun, topped with mustard, onions and spicy homemade chili sauce (split and grilled on request). Chili dogs, chili burgers and chili fries are Ben's staples. It's hard to recommend anything other than the half-smoke, worth the trip and under $10.00. Ben’s Chili Bowl - 1213 U ST NW, Washington, DC 20009
3. Rosa Mexicano. If you are looking for a fine dining experience and like upscale, modern and authentic Mexican cuisine, Rosa Mexicano is a must. Located in Penn Quarter adjacent to the China Town Metro stop, Rosa Mexicano is regarded among the best food near the Verizon Center (home of the Washington Wizards (NBA) and Washington Capitals (NHL)) according to Zagat. With a menu that is printed daily, fresh food abounds. I recommend the Budin de Pollo, which is a braised chicken tinga layered with soft corn tortillas, Chihuahua cheese, roasted Mexican peppers and grilled corn with poblano cream sauce. It's like a mexican 'pot-pie' or 'lasagna'. I hear that Rosa Mexicano has an extensive list of creative margaritas! Either way, whether you visit for food or drinks the tableside guacamole is a must - seriously! The guacomole is made with avocado, jalapeño, tomato, onion and cilantro and served with warm tortilla chips and salsa, prepared to order tableside, while you watch. Reservations are suggested. Rosa Mexicano - (202) 783-5522 - 575 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20004
If you're up for a meal outside of exhibiting hours stop by the FLEX credit union core technology booth (#260), and I would be happy to accompany you!
