Credit Union Guide to Honoring Veterans: Examples, Charities, & Facts

Due to their strong focus on local communities and their commitment to serving their members, credit unions have long been recognized for their exceptional patriotism compared to other institutions. This is especially noticeable during certain moments of the year, such as the approaching commemoration of September 11, 2001, and the tragic events that transpired on that day.

As pillars of every community, many would argue that credit unions have a duty to give back whenever they can--and most absolutely live up to that reputation. They do so not only by being patriotic, but also by helping veterans, and making a charitable impact whenever possible, too.

Examples of Patriotism

It shouldn't surprise anyone that the Navy Federal Credit Union in particular has a reputation for being patriotic. Their history is filled with examples of this, like when they partnered with the Connecticut Tigers in 2014 for an unforgettable "Fourth of July Weekend" at Dodd Stadium that people are still talking about.

The event pulled out all the stops, bringing in the United States Coast Guard Band for a pre-game concert. Not only that, but the first 500 fans through the doors got a free slice of—you guessed it—apple pie.

Although large-scale patriotic events are impressive and appreciated, smaller activities are still impactful. Many credit unions march in local parades and post content on social media to honor active military and veterans around holidays to show their support.

Supporting Our Veterans: Why It Matters

While not every credit union may have the chance to assist veterans in such a grand and memorable manner, there are still plenty of special ways for your credit union to show support. Veterans hold a significant place in our society, and it is crucial that we do our part to help them.

After faithfully serving our country, veterans often find themselves in difficult situations after their service. Many times, the service of our veterans goes ignored. Transitioning back to civilian life can be a lengthy and difficult process for many. Pew research found that re-entry is especially tough for those who experienced a traumatic event, loss, or injury.

Veterans need your help. Some ways to help veterans in your local community are:

  • Serving
  • Hosting food drives for veterans
  • Visiting veterans in nearby hospitals
  • Donating to a charity that helps veterans
  • Saying thank you

Making a Charitable Impact

It's also important to note that the National Credit Union Administration Board recently approved a new rule that would amend the "Charitable Donation Accounts" portion of its "Incidental Powers Regulation." Moving forward, "Veterans Organizations" will now be added to the definition of a qualified charity. This means that credit unions can now contribute to these organizations using a charitable donation account.

This means that credit unions everywhere will be able to better improve the lives of not only veterans but also military families as well. It's a positive change for credit unions and for the country.

Here are some trustworthy charities that you and your members can donate to:
